Proper Seam Pressing in Quilts

Pressing the seams in your quilt is one of the most important tasks for the completed work. A good press will mean that the quilt is assured a smooth flow from piece to piece both visually and to the touch. Most quilters will find that they have a style of pressing that suits them best, but before you find that style it is important to realize what pressing is not.

What Pressing is Not

Pressing the seams in your quilt is not the same as ironing. Although you will be using an iron and an ironing board, it is absolutely critical to remember that you are not ironing (that is, running the appliance over the seam with gentle pressure) but just coaxing the seam down in order to seal it and make it less visible.

Pressing the seam is often thought of as a way of strengthening the seam, but this is not really the case. No strength is added to the seam itself by having it seam pressed down; instead, pressing the seam will mean that should any stitch come undone, the cotton batting in the quilt will not push up through the seam. This can be said to strengthen the integrity of the quilt somewhat, but it does not make the seam itself any stronger.

What Pressing Is

Pressing uses the weight of the iron itself to create seam allowances that might otherwise result in lost fabric. In a work such as a quilt, which requires many pieces put together, lost millimeters on each piece can mean a big difference in the end product. Pressing quilt blocks as they are made eliminates this problem.

Pressing will also create a good loft which will come in handy when it comes time to attach the pieces. Finally, pressing will help give the quilt a uniform appearance and feel. The fabric should never cover the seam on a properly pressed quilt.

Types of Pressing

There are two types of pressing; side pressing and open pressing. Side pressing is simply pressing the seams to one side, and is generally advocated by most quilting instructors.

Open pressing involves application of the iron both to the back and the front of the blocks. This can take twice as long as side pressing, but those who use it say that it greatly helps in the appearance of the quilt. This style is most appropriate when using machine stitched pieces, which are stronger than those done by hand; the stitch is less likely to come undone, and therefore hiding a hole will not be necessary.

Pressing Technique

When you are pressing blocks in the full quilt, the seams should be pressed towards the dark patches. If your quilt involves a more intricate pattern, with spirals and compass shapes, then try pressing in a clockwise pattern; at the very least, make sure that your presses are all uniform in direction. This will lessen the bulk in the middle of the pattern when all the seams are pressed.

Pressing seams is probably one of the dullest aspects of quilting, but it is important to make sure that you do it accurately. It will help to maintain the integrity of the quilt and can also make piecing that much easier.

One last hint, don’t use steam! The heat from the iron will be sufficient for pressing. Moisture may cause colors to run, and will make the blocks more susceptible to distortion.

California Pedestrian Accident Statistics

When cars collide with pedestrians, there is high potential for serious injury. Pedestrian/motor vehicle accidents are a serious problem throughout the world. The United States has a particular problem with pedestrian deaths and injuries. About 5,000 pedestrians are killed and another 64,000 are injured in motor vehicle accidents every year in this country.

The following represents pedestrian accident statistics for the United States according to the National Highway Traffic Association and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

– Pedestrian fatalities account for 11 percent of motor vehicle fatalities.
– Over 180,000 pedestrians have been killed in motor vehicle accidents between 1975 and 2005.
– Pedestrians comprise the second largest category of motor vehicle accident deaths following occupant deaths.
– On average, a pedestrian is injured in a traffic accident every 8 minutes.
– On average, a pedestrian is killed in a traffic accident every 111 minutes.
– In 2005 a total of 4,881 pedestrian were killed in motor vehicle accidents.
– In 2005, the per capita pedestrian death rate was 1.6 per 100,000 people.

Generally, pedestrian deaths rates are higher in urban areas. There is a higher ratio of deaths to injuries in rural areas because of higher impact speeds on rural roads. However, pedestrian accidents occur most frequently in urban areas because pedestrian activity and traffic volumes are greater compared to rural areas.

The National Safety Council estimates that 85.7 percent of all non-fatal pedestrian accidents in the United States occur in urban areas and 14.3 percent occur in rural areas.

Young children and the elderly are the most vulnerable for pedestrian accident related injuries. Based on population, children under the age of 16 years are most likely to be struck by motor vehicles.

HSV-1 and HSV-2 are two of the eight known viruses which comprise the HSV family. As with all herpes viruses, they are large, enveloped visions with an icosahedral nucleocapsid consisting of 162 capsomeres, arranged around a linear, double-stranded DNA core. The genome consists of two covalently linked components, designated L (long) and S (short).

Each component consists of a unique sequence flanked by inverted repeats. Additionally, the unique L and S components can invert relative to one another, yielding four linear isomers. Each intact HSV vision contains only one of these four isomers, and each of the four is equally virulent (functionally equivalent) in the host cell.

The DNAs of HSV-1 and HSV-2 are largely collinear, and considerable homology exists between the HSV-1 and HSV-2 genomes. These homologous sequences are distributed over the entire gnomic map, and most of the polypeptides specified by one viral type are antigenically related to polypeptides of the other viral type.

This results in considerable cross-reactivity between the HSV-1 and HSV-2 glycoproteins, although unique antigenic determinants exist for each virus. Viral surface glycoproteins mediate HSV attachment to and penetration into cells and provoke host immune responses. Eleven glycoproteins of HSV have been identified (gB, gC, gD, gE, gG, gH, gI, gJ, gK, gL, and gM).

In addition, a twelfth is predicted (gN). gD is the most potent inducer of neutralizing antibodies and appears related to viral entry into a cell, and gB also is required for infectivity. Antigenic specificity is provided by gG, with the resulting antibody response allowing for the distinction between HSV-1 (gG-1) and HSV-2 (gG-2).

Two biologic properties which directly influence human disease are latency and neurovirulence. During HSV infection, visions are transported by retrograde flow along axons that connect the point of entry into the body to the nuclei of sensory neurons. Viral multiplication occurs in a small number of sensory neurons, and the viral genome then remains in a latent state for the life of the host.

With periodic reactivation brought on by events such as physical or emotional stress, fever, UV light, and tissue damage, the virus is transported back down the axon to replicate again at or near the original point of entry into the body. Such reactivation can result in clinically apparent disease or clinically inapparent infection.

The mechanisms by which HSV establishes latency are being intensely investigated but remain incompletely understood. Neurovirulence refers to the affinity with which HSV is drawn to and propagated in neuronal tissue. This can result in profound disease with severe neurologic sequelae, as is the case with neonatal HSV central nervous system (CNS) disease and with herpes simplex encephalitis in older children and adults.

Sites on the HSV genome which mediate this propensity for neurovirulence have been mapped to the thymidine kinase gene as well as the termini of the L component. Of note, the gene is required for replication in central nervous system tissue and prevents apoptosis of infected neuronal cells. Genetically engineered HSV visions lacking the gene are currently being investigated as therapies for brain tumors.
